Moneyball.
Over the years, I did dogs one at a time which is a painstaking and inefficient way to try to be competitive in field trials. After washing out 3 dogs in a row in 5 years, I decided to use the knowledge I learned in college in two years of genetics classes to help increase my odds. All the things I learned in those genetics classes applies to dogs. Nicks, crosses, and patterns – it is all there. Since 2018, I have spent 10-15 hours per week working with dog pedigrees and science – this is a part time job to me, I work harder than anyone on it.
I believe this sport is too damn expensive to try pups out of random litters or just breed to the flavor of the month. Trainers charge the same monthly rate to train a dog out of a random pairing as they do a dog out of a proven cross that creates FC’s.
The plan is simple. Save money and time by making more calculated moves. Will there be wash outs? Absolutely. However, there will be less wash outs and more winners by using well-studied proven crosses and nicking patterns. It is just that simple.
When I took the time to study all of Clooney’s 41 litters, one thing became apparent very quickly. Although Clooney has had many great outcross litters, most anything with Code Blue up front in the bitch line worked very reliably. This was even more impressive when you had Code Blue and Lean Mac. This pattern stuck out so blatantly, it was shocking in fact. When those two factors were involved of a bitch line of a pedigree, the following stats were collected. There was a total of 18 litters that amassed 336 AA points, 43 QAA, and 504 derby points.
So, when Mugzy went into heat, the choice of who to breed to was easy. My bitch has Code Blue, Grady, and Patton all up in the very front of her pedigree. The Code Blue comes from Grady and Creek Robber and the Lean Mac comes from Grady and Patton. When you combine these factors with Clooney, the results simply speak for themselves. |
